Laptop Tester on Blogger Interviews Karel Felipe Owner of Lotus Computers and Lotuspc.net, an American Company of high standards and great products.

First of all, this is a pure pleasure to be able to do this. I emailed Karel Felipe not too long ago looking to possibly do an review on one of his laptop products. Unlike 90% of the other emails I receive from his competitors, who basically send me automated replies, Karel actually took the time to respond personally. That is to me the number one reason for doing this interview and that response also reflects the quality of Lotus Computers.

HISTORY OF LOTUS COMPUTERS  

JAK: How long have you been in business?

KF: Lotus has been in business since 2007. We started out building custom desktops, then shortly after we began to make our own line of desktops, which is a business model we kept as-is until around early 2010. At that point, we introduced our first laptops: the Solstice 13 and Solstice 15. The Solstice 13 model is about the same as always, though it has received many technical improvements. The Solstice 15 has since changed, and is now based on the same family as the Eclipse 15, which has also been around for a while.

JAK: How big is your company today?

KF: We are a small company with a small staff. Surprisingly though, we have enormous production capacity, thanks to our partnerships with the world’s top suppliers. Our small size allows us to get a little more personal with our customers, which everyone really loves. As we grow though (and we’re sure growing!), our priorities are and always will be top quality products and a commitment to service and the overall experience.

JAK: Can you give us a brief history on you yourself?

KF: I founded Lotus when I was just 18 years old, using nothing more than a website I built myself. In my earlier years, I always had an interest in business but also design. I ended up studying marketing, which is a bit of a mix of both. It’s worked out, as I’ve been able to use that knowledge to create and build a brand that works and people are proud of. The brand became bigger than me, and it’s now recognized nationally and globally for quality, service, and stylish design.

JAK: What is your number one seller in your laptop systems?

KF: All our laptop models generate about an equal amount of interest and sales, but our new Eclipse 15 is especially popular. Although it’s marketed mainly as a gaming laptop, it turns out professional users who do things like design and engineering really love the Eclipse 15. Our Solstice line is also really great, and that one’s popular with a wide range of people like business users, everyday consumers, and even gamers.

JAK: What Platforms do you use in your production?

KF: Our Solstice 13 is based on a platform built by Gigabyte, which is well known for making some of the best PC components on the market. They do a really superb job on the Solstice 13, and our job is to ensure it’s customized to order, perfectly built, setup properly, and exceeds expectations. I’m happy to say this is all true; our customers absolutely love their laptops. The same goes for the Solstice 15 and Eclipse 15. Those are built on a different but equally high quality platform by Clevo. The same process goes into them as far as customization, quality control, and the assurance that the customer will love the computer for years. In regards to where they are built, the base platform for all the laptops are built in Asia, but a really big part of the work, customization, setup, etc. is done right here in the USA. Every single laptop goes through a testing process and thorough inspection to ensure everything works exactly as designed. We also never include any bloatware; just what’s needed to make the laptops run as designed, whether using Windows or Ubuntu Linux.

JAK: Those are great platforms, being that you are an American company, does that help drive sales?

KF: Being an American company that builds in America, it absolutely boosts sales. There are tons of American computer companies, but most of the computers people buy from other brands are assembled entirely overseas. I was aware of this back in 2007, and that’s one of the reasons I started Lotus. I knew people wanted good quality computers, built by hand in the USA by an American workforce. Although our footprint on the economy and job market is small right now, I have promised to keep as many jobs here as possible, even if that means less profit. We see what has happened to the job market and our economy due in part to outsourcing, and we want to do whatever we can to create jobs and tax revenue here in the USA. Maybe some would think I’m a bad businessman, but it’s the only right thing to do. We all want to give back to the country that gave us this opportunity in the first place.

JAK: What is your best gaming laptop, and business styled laptop?

KF: Our best gaming laptop is absolutely the Eclipse 15. It has enormous power and can handle just about anything, really. I think we have two excellent business laptops: The Solstice 13 is great as a lightweight, compact travel companion. It has a good amount of power, though it’s not exactly powerful enough for serious number crunching, 3D graphics, design, etc. However for most “office” tasks, it’s an excellent, very professional looking laptop. The Solstice 15 is also great, and it comes upgradable all the way to a quad core Intel Core i7, and comes with dedicated NVIDIA graphics (with Optimus) standard. The finish isn’t quite as professional as the 13″ laptop, but it’s still a great business PC for those who need something bigger and more powerful.

Gaming Laptop Review

The word is out and everyone is wanting to get their gaming hands on what is soon to be the best gaming laptop of 2012. The ultra cool, and brand new Series 7 Seven Gaming Laptop by Samsung is about to be one more giant leap for this company’s commitment to laptop computer excellence and for gaming elite everywhere.

A very skilful blend of high-tech components and superior materials, this Samsung screams gaming and performance. The Series 7 gaming laptop is made for the gamer who wants extreme performance and high quality graphically intense gaming deliverance for their favorite games. Making this Sammy gaming rig a gamer’s dream.

Built to provide pure gaming excellence, this Series 7 by Samsung is also made to surpass user demands, by incorporating a quick switch from gaming mode to web surfing mode at a simple turn of a switch. So you can conserve battery life, but also keep the light bill low as well. There are several configurations, in gaming mode the fans run at full speeds, giving excellent game play and smooth operation of your controls. There is also a Library setting, Green, and balanced. Making this a friendly laptop in quiet settings and a real bomb at home.

There are discussions about the releases of two different models of the Series 7 gaming laptop, one with the Sandy Bridge and a high powered AMD graphics processor or the new Ivy Bridge and the ever powerful GeForce GTX 670M series GPU. This may happen soon, and we are keeping an eye out to see if and or when they release that version.

A Quad-Core Intel i7 Processor drives our test machine, with 16GB’s of Memory and 2TBs of fast storage, a 1080p Screen, 2.0mp Web Camera and Blue-Ray, with 3D over HDMI and a very powerful cooling system. While we marked everything about this laptop with very high unbiased marks, we did notice that in gaming mode the touch pad is turned off, for some this may be a bother, but we highly doubt it as many people use wireless gaming mouses over a touch pad anyways, but still a simple on off switch would be better that having to get out of game mode to turn it on.

Gamers in the USA and North America who are looking for a super high-end gamer friendly laptop may have been jealous slightly at fellow gamers in Europe who were able to buy the series 7 gaming laptop.

In contrast to the lightweight Series 7 Chronos Laptop, this would be in my mind the complete opposite between the two.

A very versatile laptop for both the high-end crazy gamer and the business person dealing with CGI work or other graphic intense programming. The Series 7 Gaming Laptop from Samsung is excellence in the making and I believe it won’t be long when other companies will follow suit against Samsung’s intense gaming system.

I was very impressed by the solid look and feel of this Samsung Series 7 Chronos and its powerful display leaves nothing to question. This is for sure a great Samsung product. The Aluminum finish is very classy and gives this laptop a very solid and professional feel.

Stunning and Sleek, Lighter than a Mac and more productive, the Chronos Series 7 is a well designed machine using the best of cutting edge technologies to give you optimal and ingenious performance! If you have ever owned a Samsung product you are familiar with their quality and design. The Chronos 7 is actually just like it’s cousins in all of Samsung’s electronics, it’s awesome.

Now if you wanted to know what makes this baby tick check out the specs. 6GBs of optimal Memory, i7 Intel Processor, 0.94 x 14.3 x 9.4 in in dimensions and the most solid feel and construction i have seen in a laptop in a long time. This Sammy’s got some kick where other’s don’t! I read some other reviews like Cnet’s and Engadget’s and I have to wonder where these guys get off? The Chronos is an elegant and impressive innovative laptop from Samsung, give me a break guys! Do you guys all just copy cat each other or what? All I hear about is the mouse being funky and not once did we have an issue.

I read Cnet’s review and I have to disagree with the person who did the review on the Chronos. I don’t know how anyone can actually compare two different lines in laptop technology and say Samsung was attempting to compete with Apple products. Which goes to say, you need to be an unbiased reviewer before you actually review anything. You can’t sit there and compare one device in a class by itself like the Series 7 Chronos with what sits on your coffee table at home, like I am sure Scott Stein did.

I won’t even touch on Engadget’s review, these guys wait for Cnet to do theirs on the Chronos 7 before trying their own luck!

This is a Windows OS Notebook, if and when should Samsung come out with their own OS, and develop a line of computers to run solely on their own OS, then you can compare them to Apple’s MacBook, but in this instance, I believe Samsung was just trying to stand out among the clones of Laptops and Notebooks out there, and I also believe this Samsung Series 7 Chronos 700Z5A is just that, a stand alone betterment in the world of Laptops!

A powerful Intel® Core™ i7 Processor runs this dream machine from Samsung, along with a host of excellent other components, like a 750GB Hard Drive, 6gb memory bank, a nice 15.6″ Display and a very sleek and responsive over-sized mouse pad. I didn’t have any issues using it at all, maybe the reviewer on Cnet should have washed his fingers first before using the mouse pad to do his review. I don’t know, but with what we saw and for a whole week, we had no issues at all.

The series 7 Chronos has a sleek creative and easy to use slot-loading DVD-RW drive with a dependable single 2.0 USB port on the right hand side of this awesome laptop. On the left is a very easy to find mini-VGA, with HDMI and two very useful USB 3.0 ports along with a business minded and school minded Kensington lock, perfect for securing this beautiful Series 7, it also has the normal 3.5mm headphone/microphone jacks and a very impressive and creative hinged RJ45 connector that can be useful to those who need it.

Another good point is the Ethernet port which is also creatively hinged to allow you to use a full-sized Ethernet connector even though the laptop has such a skinny profile. An easy to find SD slot is located at the very front of this Series 7.

The Chronos also supports a bass sub-woofer speaker system, well incorporated high proficiency cooling vents and an easily removable panel for quick and easy access to the system memory, which makes this one exceptional Samsung Product

The Samsung Series 7 out performed several test laptops from other manufactures of laptops in the same price range! I just have to say I loved the power and design, this laptop just rocks, period. The Chronos is going to be a tough competitor against several brands of laptops already in the running.

I really liked the smooth finish and soft touch keys, making this a very comfortable to use Samsung Series 7 laptop. The CD/DVD is very nice, and brilliant designed piece of perfection on the side of this system.

Samsung’s very cool Fast Start technology allows this Series 7 Chronos to load up and start when you need it to in under 3 seconds time, just close the lid when you need to run to the store for some milk, when you come back, just open it up and poof you’re right where you were before you left!

This is a very sleek business minded and student minded system. Comfortable and very detailed construction with a nice approach to doing something different, This Samsung 7 Chronos 700Z5A-S03 is well worth the price tag. If you are a busy business person or a college student looking for something that will last a long time, this is what you need.

Samsung doesn’t seem to like to play around when it comes to their notebooks. The Series 9 Notebook from Samsung is an extraordinary piece of technology and entertainment and well worth the price tag. Seamless design and wonderful materials, we fell in love with Samsung’s Series 9 and you will too.
Samsung Series 9 NP900X3A-B01 13.3-Inch Laptop
Their new releases have been nothing short of extraordinary and impressive over the last few years. The Samsung Series 9 is a perfectly balanced notebook, that has all the advancements Samsung is famous for making, applied into their series 9.

The Samsung 9′s ability to be a great all around performer for business or pleasure is obvious, and with this Sammy you also have the power and the advanced technologies to keep owners busy in comfort. A very glossy and cleanly seamed screen gives you ultra high resolution and bright crisp images, a little lack luster in vibrancy, but nothing to keep media users away from buying this.

We enjoyed this notebook during our review, and think it’s a great runner up against the other closely priced units. The Series 9 is one of the more impressive releases by Samsung. I also enjoyed the ease of use and the very responsive touch mouse pad. The keyboard is easy on the fingers, and quiet for typing. A great feature I like when using a laptop or notebook in a area around other people. Who wants to hear typing?

At 2.88 pounds, this is lighter than the Macbook, and no heavier than some tablets I’ve seen. Actually I have seen some that are heavier than this Notebook. The Samsung 9 is 13.3 inches and fit’s easily into a laptop bag with other laptops. If you are like me you may have several.

The Samsung 9 Series also comes with the Intel Core i5 or Core i7 processors and up to 8GB of DDR3 Ram. You can pick from a 128gb to 256gb SS Drive that allows you to have very quick response and resume times on the go. The Series 9 is a close counterpart to the Chronos Series 7, yet priced a little lower and less flashy in design, yet still one incredible Samsung product.

A few useful connectivity ports to point out, to make things easy there is a USB 3.0 port, a USB 2.0 port, a headphone/microphone jack and an SD card slot located on the sides of this machine that enclosed in a flip open system. We think this is a very useful design modification that only Samsung could have dreamed up. The flip open pot enclosures are what really keeps the 9 so thin. It is also made from a very unique material called duralumin, which is a very strong yet lightweight alloy that covers the top and sides.

Sound is pretty nice, not headbanging impressive, but nice and clear. I actually listened to Pandora for a while on it and enjoyed the sound. No issues, not brassy or ringing, but nothing really awesome per-say.

The Mousepad is very responsive and over-sized. Much like the Chronos, the Series 9 has close to the same take on that new multitouch system for a mousepad. Again no issues with ours and we enjoyed it very much.

All in all I would say the Samsung Series 9 is a real artistic take on a laptop/notebook, where other’s fail at thinness and design, Samsung soars. Very impressive, and sleek, and thin. I think you yourself would enjoy the Series 9 and enjoy using it as much as we did. This is a great piece of technology and  worth taking a look at.
